What is A Community College

The idea of community colleges is centered on expanding the access of the people to bulic higher education and providing a wide range of services to different groups of the community. These services include vocational or technical training, skill enhance met and upgrading, and information and consulting services.

The first community college, Joliet Junior College, Illinois, USA, was established in 1901. Today there are many hundreds of community colleges exist in many countries:

 

Stages of Establishment of Sana’a Community College

In July 1992, the Government of Yemen began to explore the feasibility of establishing a                community college system as independent institution for higher education.

In February 1996, the Representatives Council " Parliament ' passed the Community College Law (Law No.5). This law stated the mission of community colleges and defined its academic and administrative rules and structures.

In October 1997, the Yemen Community Colleges Project has been initiated. Under this project the educational curricula have been developed.

In August 1998, Sana’a Community College was established by a presidential decree. Dr Mohammad Abubaker Mohsen became the first dean of the college.

In January, 2001, SCC has started operation. Three study programs were inaugurated. These are:

  • Computer & Electronics Engineering Technology Program (CETP)
  • Computer Software Application (CSAP)
  • Internet Technology (ITP)

 

Goals and objectives of Sana’a Community College

The Community Colleges Law has defined the goals and objectives of community colleges as follows:

  1. Preparing human resources required for development in fields of engineering, technology and business management.
  2. Assisting the community through extension of educational services.
  3. Establishing a flexible educational system, which is able to cope with advances in technology and to meet requirements of labor market.
  4. Providing vocational and technical training for the citizens of the community to upgrade their skills and knowledge.

 

Goals and objectives of Sana’a Community College

The goals and objectives of Sana’a Community College have been stated as follows:

  1. Provision of full-time post secondary education and training programs to produce skilled upper middle-level manpower for the productive sector and the community.
  2. Provision of both part-time and short-term programs for professional upgrading of para-professionals from the productive sector.
  3. Provision of relevant servives to the productive sector and the community, including information and production and consulting services. Also, provision of in-house contract education programs for industry and enterprises.
  4. Provision of education and skills development and upgrading programs for unemployed adults.

 

General objectives of SCC study programs

Along with the specific objectives of each study program, the following objectives are common for all programs:

  • Provide students with competency in PC applications .
  • Prepare students to communicate effectively within a global environment through extensive preparation in oral and written English.
  • Provide students with a business and technology oriented thinking skills.
